However, it will just stretch the textures which make up those dots if no high resolution assets are in the game, but the edges of textures will typically be sharper since there's more dots making up the edges. That typically applies to older games as well, if you increase resolution even to levels beyond what was available when the game was out, it actually renders more dots, it doesn't just stretch the image. The benefit to higher resolution, as you said in your original post, is everything is sharper and crisper since there are more "dots" that make up your image at any given time. So all those screens will see the same amount of game world (in most modern games where how much you see, FOV, is based off aspect ratio, I think some old games used to base how much you could see off resolution, but I don't know if any modern games do that). So that determines how much of the game world you see. Those are the two basic ways of determining how much of the game world you see, but some games also simply lock FOV so everyone sees the same amount of game world and if you have a different aspect ratio you just get black bars. Another option is to use hor+, which many people think is the "correct" way to approach it, which locks your vertical FOV and varies horizontal FOV, so a larger aspect ratio (wider screen) you'll see more of the game world than someone with a lower aspect ratio (more square or more vertical) screen. They either lock the horizontal FOV and vary vertical FOV, often referred to as "vert-" (so a larger aspect ratio, you see less since your screen is wider, and the width of the FOV is fixed and so your vertical is being chopped). Most games link FOV to your aspect ratio. I'm not sure what the facepalming is about, FOV is a reasonably simple concept but something a lot of gamers don't really understand and given how shittily some games handle it, something a lot of game designers don't really understand either.
